Personal Art Show Poster

For my design and communication class, I completed a poster for a fictional art show by myself. I went through the complete process of creating a piece of graphic design, from ideation and gathering influences to printing and analog means of image making.

I used tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign as well as analog processes to make my poster. I also used my skills in photography to complete parts of my poster.

INFLUENCES

I curated a list of ten of my biggest influences artistically. I went through each of them, coming up with things I am inspired by these influences. I repeated this process 3-4 times, coming up with a list of 5 themes I want to highlight in my poster.

I then wrote an artist statement going into detail for each of these themes. This exercise helps me pinpoint the exact themes I want to explore, and the feeling I want to evoke in my audience. These points will guide through the poster-making process.

DENOTATIVE TYPOGRAPHY

I first spent two weeks making a poster with denotative typography. My denotative typography poster does not contain any imagery, fancy lettering, or color. By picking the type face, finely adjusting the kerning, tracking, leading, etc. of the type, and designing the composition on the page, I can make text express the feeling of the text, yet not distract the reader.

I went through a few iterations of the connotative poster.

CONNOTATIVE TYPOGRAPHY

Connotative typography needs to not only read the words, but also express the feeling of the words that it reads. I experimented with more connotative typefaces, and in the end decided to achieve the look I’m after with the analog method of manipulating printouts of the type in the real world and taking pictures. I then processed these photos to give them a polished look.

IMAGE-MAKING

For image-making, I made a collage, some light painting, and used my photography.

I combined the imageries I made so they would work better for the poster.

FUNCTIONAL TYPOGRAPHY

After the main body of the poster is done, I experimented with more type to reflect the function of the poster.
